A family must work as a team unit during an emergency, and the American Red Cross recommends that each family be prepared for self-sufficiency for up to 3 days. The emergency kit will provide you with this, but it is up to you and your family to make an emergency action plan and stick to it when severe weather strikes. This will give you the best chance to not get separated from your family, but if you do, you will have the resources to find each other again. Your plan needs to include the following (a portable small safe or plastic bin is a great storage place for these items):

1. Emergency Action Plan: Who is going to be evacuating with you? Where will you go? Where will you stay? How will you get there? Is there a place you will meet in case you get separated? Everyone in your household should practice this plan, be comfortable with the execution and know exactly when and where to go.

2. Medical Information List: Medial, allergy, and prescription drug history and insurance information for each person evacuating.

3. Purse or Wallet: Your ID, bank information, and cash need to be readily available and easy to grab.

4. Vital Information List: Copies of documents and a way to make them secure and accessible.

5. Emergency Preparedness Kit: Check out the list here!

6. Get Back To Life Plan: This is a worst-case scenario in the instance that you are unable to live in your home due to damage, or even your city for an extended amount of time. Figure out a nearby city, or relative’s home that you could go to in case your home/city is destroyed.

7. Stay Calm: This is your best defense in any emergency. Be the voice of reason.

All it takes is one tornado to destroy the things you love, the people you love, the secure lifestyle you have worked so hard to create. If you get separated from a family member, contact local authorities immediately and go directly to the meeting location. Be prepared and feel confident in your planning.
