The Lawton Wolverines took the long bus ride to Arlington, Texas on Friday to take on the AAA Academy Stallions. Undeterred by the 3 1/2 hour ride, or a driving rain that delayed the start of the game, the Wolverines ran all over AAA Academy on their way to a 51-7 win at Sam Houston High School. The Wolverines totaled 366 yards on the ground in the victory, a game in which they never trailed.

A lightning strike as the teams took the field for warm-ups seemed like it was going to delay the start of the game, but it only delayed the start five minutes. But this was not the final delay in the game because of the weather; with Lawton (6-and-1) leading 23-7 with 6:50 left in the second quarter, a massive lightning strike finally halted the game, as a rainfall of biblical proportions began to fall. There had been several lightening cracks throughout the second quarter, but this one was too big for the referees to miss.

Following initial confusion that the game had been called off, the teams took the field after a 55 minute delay. Lawton quickly made their hosts wish the game had been called, as the Wolverines scored on every meaningful possession except for one after the game resumed.

Lawton, currently ranked the The No. 2 team in Oklahoma Class 6A-II, has already had a game called off this season due to weather. The game scheduled for Week 3 at Sapulpa was called because of rain and lightening, so coach Randy Breeze wanted to make sure this game was played to a finish.

And finish the Wolverines did do.

The Wolverines were once again led by a solid ground game, featuring Tre Curry and DeQuan Weaver. Weaver totaled 136 yards and scored three times, while carrying the ball just 10 carries; two of his scores came in the first quarter as Lawton jumped out to an early 16-0 lead. Curry complemented Weaver, picking up 121 yards and two scores on 18 carries. The success of the ground game can be directly attributed to a rebuilt offensive line, which has survived injury to center Hagen Meservy and dominated the Stallion defense Friday night.

Quarterback Zack Hanna added a nine-yard score and freshman receiver Miles Davis finished the evening's scoring with a 70-yard end-around with four minutes left in the contest.

The Wolverines continue their drive to the division championship as they next host the Midwest City Bombers, Friday night at Cameron Stadium. Kick-off is at 7pm. If you can't catch the game live, tune in for the contest starting with the Wolverine pre-game show at 6:45 on Lawton/Ft. Sill's Rock Station Z94 and z94.com.
