Although you can usually write off most video game adaptations, 'Assassin's Creed' feels like it could finally break the mold. After all, an acclaimed actor like Michael Fassbender doesn't sign onto any old piece of junk -- there must be something special about this project.

And it looks like it's officially scheduled to arrive in the summer of 2015.

According to Coming Soon, 'Assassin's Creed' will hit theaters on May 22, 2015, taking advantage of the Memorial Day weekend. For those keeping track, that means it'll be released three weeks after 'The Avengers 2' rampages across the box office and within weeks of 'Star Wars: Episode 7.' In other words, 'Assassin's Creed' will have some pretty stiff competition...but let's not bet against the video game series that's sold countless millions of copies and inspired seven sequels.

Although Fassbender has been attached to the film for some time, there has been little talk of a director. Now that a release date is on the calendar, that should change very soon.

For those unfamiliar with the series, 'Assassin's Creed' follows Altair, a highly skilled killer in the Medieval Middle East who wages war against the Templars, a secret society with world domination on its mind. Although the series has always focused on historical accuracy, it blends science fiction into the overall narrative. The story is told from the point of view of one of Altair's modern day descendants, who finds himself embroiled in an strange mystery and explores his "genetic memories" through a device called the Animus. Yeah, it's pretty far out.

So if you're looking forward to seeing a hooded Michael Fassbender leap from rooftops and slice the throats of countless unnamed baddies, mark your calendar. You only have to wait two years.
