The 5 Best Beaches In Oklahoma For A Summer Day
People love making fun of Oklahoma beaches until they actually see one.
Technically, we don’t even have natural lakes here. Every major lake in Oklahoma was built by somebody with a bulldozer, a dam project, and enough confidence to flood an entire valley. But after decades of doing that over and over again, the state accidentally got pretty good at building beaches too.
Not Florida beaches, obviously. Nobody’s picking seashells to bring home later. Zebra-mussel shells are a real maybe though.
Oklahoma beach culture is its own thing.
It’s families sticking their toes in the sand for a relaxing Saturday. Teenagers packed into the parking lots after dark. Somebody’s uncle hauling a grill down to the water in cargo shorts that haven’t fit correctly since the W. Bush administration, and that's all cool in OK.
For a lot of kids, the local beach becomes the entire social scene during summer break.
My nephews basically live at theirs this time of year. Every evening they disappear toward the lake dressed in boots, jeans, and filthy t-shirts that they refuse to change before going out. To them, the beach is like what Main Street used to be for millennials when gas was under a dollar, and everybody just drove around for no reason.
So if you’re looking for the best beaches in Oklahoma, here are five that people keep coming back to every summer.
Sandy Beach At Lake Murray
Down in southern Oklahoma, Lake Murray State Park probably has the closest thing Oklahoma gets to an actual vacation beach. The sand is wide, the water stays busy all summer, and the whole place feels built for families. Half the state seems to end up there between Memorial Day and August.
Sunset Beach At Lake Hefner
While Hefner doesn’t feel like a traditional swimming beach, it still gets a spot because of the atmosphere and popularity. People bike and walk around it, sailboats sail, and people head out there just to watch the crazy dudes kite surf every day. Literally, every. Single. Day.
Keystone Lake Beaches
Around Keystone Lake, you’ll find several sandy swim areas that get absolutely packed once temperatures hit the upper 90s. People like to line up their boats on the beach to celebrate the whole Party Beach vibe. It's also popular at a ton of other lakes too, which is hilariously weird. You haul out a boat just to go sit on the beach? Only in Oklahoma.
Bell Cow Lake
Bell Cow Lake has one of the smaller local beaches that feels less touristy than the others. Lots of families love this beach, and if you spend enough time there, you'll become one of the regulars.
Grand Lake
Up in northeast Oklahoma, Grand Lake o' the Cherokees is basically summer camp for the entire region. Marinas, coves, swimming areas, restaurants, cabins, jet skis, etc... The beaches there may not be massive, but the summer vibe carries the whole thing, and that’s really the whole secret behind Oklahoma beaches.
I would also mention the Lake Altus-Lugert beach. It's really nice, but only when enough water is in the lake to tie it all together. Also, the beach at Tom Steed is pretty great too and never full of people. It would have made the list, but the goal is to keep that one a secret.
Nobody’s confusing them for the Gulf Coast, but they're good enough to enjoy as if they were.
