This was a big talking point in our little Northern OK Mayberry growing up. Someone knew someone who talked to the diver who saw one of these magnificent beasts while making repairs in the spillway.

This was before the internet was in every household, and long before social media and cell phones were everyday life. It wasn't until I was much older that I realized, I'm fairly sure every lake in America was rumored to have a giant catfish living in it.

The real question.

How did everyone have the same rumor during a time when none of us were connected to any other part of the country?

Also, I wonder how this tall tale got started.

It's curious how rumors spread back in the 90s. Like that thing with Marilyn Manson... Every teenager in America knew it, but nobody realized everyone knew it because none of us were connected outside of the lunchroom table.

It's wild.
