David Bowie’s Son Jabs Russian State Media for Using Father’s Lyrics

David Bowie's son, Duncan Jones, recently stepped up on Twitter after Russian State Media offered a tweet that quoted the lyrics of his father.

Jones, the film director for such movies as Source Code, Moon and Warcraft, caught notice of a tweet coming from the Russian State Media account that utilized the Bowie lyrics "Ground control to Major Tom" along with a link to a post about NASA commenting on the future of U.S. and Russian cooperation in the space program.

The Twitter exchange occurred on Feb. 25, a day after Russia started its invasion of Ukraine. As pointed out by Society of Rock, there were reports of several Russian government websites being disabled by the hacking collective Anonymous, who claimed they took the news website offline. But the RT website appears to be working normally at present.

Given that "Ground control to Major Tom" are lyrics from Bowie's "Space Oddity," a song that tells the tale of an astronaut ultimately cut off from communication who ends up lost in space, Jones responded with an alternate suggestion for Russia's choice of lyrics and replaced them with other Bowie lyrics of his choosing - those from "Heroes."

"Wrong Song," wrote Jones followed by two heart emojis surrounding an emoji of the Ukrainian flag. He then dropped the lyrics: "I, I can remember (I remember) / Standing, by the wall (by the wall) / And the guns, shot above our heads (over our heads) / And we kissed, as though nothing could fall (nothing could fall) / And the shame, was on the other side / Oh we can beat them, for ever and ever / Then we could be Heroes, just for one day."
