Dirty Heads (Feat. Matisyahu), ‘Dance All Night’ – Song Review

The Dirty Heads recruited formerly-Hasidic rapper Matisyahu to guest on ‘Dance All Night,’ the second single off their latest album, ‘Cabin by the Sea,’ and the collaboration may seem spiritually a bit out of whack — but musically it totally makes sense. Known for the kind of laid-back Southern California reggae grooves made famous by bands like Sublime and 311, the Heads actually met Matisyahu for the first time back in his Hasidic days while they were both on the road with 311.

Heads singer Jared Watson said that the connection was instant and authentic — and eventually led directly to the ‘All Night’ collaboration. “We became friends and acquaintances, and when the new album came up, I was writing ‘Dance All Night,’” Watson told told Diffuser.fm. ”He came in the studio, heard the song, loved it, absolutely crushed it.”

“Crushed it” are the words of Watson and not necessarily ones that should show up in a review of one of the band’s own songs, but we’re including them because he’s dead-on right — if, that is, you are a fan of that eclectic, slow-burning reggae groove that you would expect to hear if you triangulated the sonic intersection of the Dirty Heads, Matisyahu and 311.

And if you’re not down with that sound? By now it should be pretty obvious that you are better off turning around and running the other way.
