Watch Iggy Pop and New Order Cover Joy Division

Iggy Pop joined some New Order members onstage last night in New York and played a couple of classic songs by Joy Division, the band that spawned New Order.

The artists were taking part in the 24th annual Tibet House U.S. Benefit Concert at Carnegie Hall. Bernard Sumner, the only current New Order member who was also in Joy Division, performed with two of his newish bandmates and the Stooges frontman.

The group played two Joy Division classics: 'Transmission' and 'Love Will Tear Us Apart.' You can see a video of the latter above and a snippet of the former below. They also played 'Californian Grass,' a song that showed up on last year's New Orders outtakes set 'Lost Sirens.' You can watch that here:

Sumner told Metro that he was super-excited to perform with the punk icon. "I’ve been a massive fan of Iggy’s from the early days of Joy Division,” he said. “I shook his hand once! A friend was a roadie for him. I was a bit inebriated at the time. I was so pleased to meet him that I got really drunk."

The benefit show also included performances by Philip Glass, Patti Smith (who paid tribute to Lou Reed), Sufjan Stevens and members of the National.
