
Elk Collision Warns Drivers On HWY 62 Near Indiahoma And Cache
If you're traveling west of Lawton down HWY 62, there's a stretch of open land between Cache and Indiahoma that is prone to vehicle accidents involving animals. On Thursday night, a UPS truck was totaled by an elk, reminding drivers to be hypervigilant in this year.
HWY 62 serves as the intersection between farmland and the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge between Cache and Indiahoma. Traveling in this area is especially dangerous during the fall as deer are in the midst of rutting season. But throughout the year, it's still a good idea to keep a sharp eye out as elk and other animals routinely cross the highway.
Drivers urged to slow down on HWY 62 between Indiahoma and Cache.
Around 9:30 p.m. Thursday, the Indiahoma Fire Department posted two pictures of a UPS truck that was totaled by an elk. The front of the UPS truck was crushed in, headlights were gone and the drivers side window shattered.
According to the Indiahoma Fire Department, stated that the driver of the truck was not injured but the elk did not survive. The fire department also used the wreck to remind drivers to slow down on HWY 62 between Cache and Indiahoma, especially at night.

Animal-related collisions are most common in the fall in Oklahoma.
Oklahoma typically sees an increase in animal-related collisions during the fall, specifically from September through November, which is the height of deer rutting season. But animal-related collisions can happen anytime of year in Oklahoma, especially in areas prone to animal-related collisions, like on HWY 62 between Cache and Indiahoma.
