Jim Dunlop Sr., one of the most influential music gear innovators, has passed away.

Musicians are likely most familiar with Dunlop guitar picks and know Jim and his company to be the originators of the "Cry Baby" wah-wah pedal. His business, Dunlop Manufacturing, was founded in 1965 as the chemical engineer built it from the ground up, starting in his home.

Reports of his death surfaced within the music industry. American Musical Supply shared the news on Facebook, posting an image of "R.I.P." spelled out in guitar picks along with a statement, which reads, "Rest in Peace, Jim Dunlop. Thank you for the years of innovations. You made a major impact to the guitar industry and will be remembered forever. Thank You." AMS also commented that they received word from a representative "late last night" (Feb. 6).

His son, Jim Dunlop Jr. and daughter, Jasmin Dunlop Powell, also shared photos of their father yesterday (Feb. 6), which was met with supportive comments lamenting the loss of Dunlop Sr., including one from Testament frontman Chuck Billy.

Guitarist Stevie Salas, who has played with Mick Jagger, Rod Stewart, George Clinton and more, also paid tribute to the late innovator, as seen in the tweet below.

Loudwire extends condolences to the Dunlop family and all who knew Jim Dunlop Sr. Rock would not be where it is today without the vision and creative efforts of this legend.
