Lawton Ditches Fence In Front Of Lawton High
On my way into work this morning, I noticed something new. City of Lawton crews were taking down the fence that stretches up Fort Sill Boulevard from Ferris to Taylor. It's not the first time we've seen crews take this fence down, I think it's been replaced two or three times since I've lived here, but according to the crewmen I talked to, this time it's permanent. No more fences down Fort Sill Boulevard.
I cannot tell you how much this little move has improved the overall scenery around Lawton High School. It makes you wonder why it was there in the first place. I guess I could see the purpose of it being to keep student from jay-walking across the street, encouraging those to cross at designated areas. That makes more sense than keeping students out of the street. If that were the case, it'd be along the East curb right?
It's curious how this will effect traffic in the area. On more than one occasion, I've played witness to someone lost in looking at the old wall mural there and rolling right up into the fence. Twice I've seen it happen at night, once during the day. The bigger problem seems to be the old lane dividing line paint. When it rains, those lines disappear. At least, you really have to concentrate to see them. Those that drive that stretch of road probably think of it as second nature now. They can tell where they are within the lanes based on how deep the potholes are.
When are they to begin replacing roads under the CIP we voted on earlier this year? Might have to call your city councilor or Mayor Booker and remind them of that political promise. Surely, with the economic apocalypse this pandemic has been, they're surely not carrying on stealing the street money to buy the old creamery still right?
