It took a while, but Megadeth finally won their first Grammy award this year, taking home the trophy for Best Metal Performance. For some reason, the house band played Metallica’s “Master of Puppets” as they walked to the stage to accept the award. Frontman Dave Mustaine spoke with Billboard about his reaction to hearing the Metallica track instead of a Megadeth song.

“They could have played any song by anybody, and it wouldn’t have mattered because that was our moment,” Mustaine says. “I could see the correlation with [the band] who would think, 'Oh, Megadeth, Metallica, we don’t know any Megadeth, but we do know this one Metallica song, so let’s play this. You think he’ll get mad? I don’t think so, let’s hope not. Hit it, Lefty!'"

Mustaine continues, "And then we get up there and go, ‘Boy, that was the worst f--king version of 'Master of Puppets' I’ve ever heard.' But that kind of stuff, you’ve just won a Grammy and you’re going to worry about some house band doing a cover song in the background?”

As to what Mustaine was thinking about finally winning the Grammy, he says, “A little bit of everything. Obviously the gratitude of being recognized, but also the disappointment lingering from the years where they’ve given the award to somebody that didn’t belong in that category."

Megadeth had been nominated for Grammys numerous times before, and in an interview with Loudwire Nights affiliate Banana 101.5 in Flint, Mich., that you can listen to above, bassist David Ellefson, talked about the difference between this year's award ceremony and previous Grammy nights.

"It's a nice change," Ellefson says. "I've been Grammy-nominated for a lot of years, which is also awesome, but it's nice to be Grammy Award-winning, that's for sure... It's twelve times nicer to know we're now finally Grammy Award-winning."

As to when we can expect the follow-up to Dystopia, Mustaine tells it will probably be 2018. "We’re not doing anything [in the studio] this year," says Mustaine. "We’ve got two big U.S. tours this year, and then we’ve got a bunch of European dates that we’re doing too, so we’re pretty busy."
