OU Sooner Fans Start Petition to Fire Coach After Loss
What a wild weekend in college sports! If you don't like or watch sports, this is still quite entertaining... let me catch you up.
The University of Kansas (KU) is one of those NCAA football teams that is supposed to just show up, get beat, and be an easy win for the better teams in the conference. KU has been that team for twenty-ish years.
This past weekend, the OU Sooners traveled to Kansas and came away from the field upset in the biggest sports shocker of the year. While most fans claim it came down to a handful of bad referee calls in the closing minutes, things looked bad for the Sooners throughout the whole game.
While most fans agree it was likely the culmination of bad weather, cold air, a rain delay, it's the same old OU Sooner bandwagon song and dance on Monday...
It's important to note that it's not the entire Sooner fanbase that is sinking so deep into the pit of abysmal fans at the moment, but the squeaky wheel gets the grease.
"We have to fire a coach!"
It's an Oklahoma tradition as old as the school itself. Every time the team takes a loss, fans want to fire coaches and try something new.
While fans latched on to the idea of firing new Head Coach Brent Venables last year, it seems someone else on that staff is catching all the hell for losing to KU... Offensive Coordinator Jeff Lebby.
Facebook, Twitter/X, Reddit, etc... are full of fans calling for his ousting over a single loss against a team they should have steamrolled over.
The ire and frustrations of these fair-weather fans aren't just the normal coping mechanisms either. Beyond fans, the local Norman newspaper (how retro!) printed an article about how it's time for Lebby to move on. One fan even started a petition to remove Lebby over at Change.org.
Edit: After receiving a few dozen emails from angry and technology-illiterate Sooner fans spamming us "fake news" and similar sentiments (using their big feelings), here's a link to the social media thread where the petition can be found.
The reality.
What I think OU Sooner fans struggle with the most is that they're just a little spoiled and used to winning. Well, they're used to winning regular-season games... Bowl games are a mixed bag with an almost 50/50 post-season record.
With the shift after a ton of fanbase-shattering news came ahead of last year about a conference move to the SEC, the end of the 121-year Bedlam series, and the winningest coach OU ever had up and left, the new coaching staff got a pass until the third or fourth loss last year.
As they've been unbelievably perfect up til now this year, people just thought OU was back.
They're not. Not yet anyway. While most of us non-OU fans agree they could build back into the powerhouse they've always been, the move to the SEC is such a wildcard move.
The school will earn more money, but Big12 programs don't have the best track record of leaving the conference. Believe me, even the non-OU fans hope the Sooners don't become the Southeastern Conference KU or Baylor... but it'd sure be hilarious if they did.
