It's not very often that wildlife records get broken in Oklahoma, but it does happen every once in a while.

That's the case for an angler who recently reeled in our new record spotted gar down at Lake Texoma.

The Catch That Broke an Oklahoma Record

While it doesn't seem very large at all, considering other types of gar weigh in at nearly 300 pounds, the spotted variety is much smaller overall.

In fact, the world record spotted gar is only 10 lbs, 9 ounces, meaning this Oklahoma angler only missed the new world record by 0.05 ounces.

How Close He Came to a World Record

You've gotta have some respect for the guy too, he didn't go slipping weights into that fish like they do up in Wisconsin to get records and win tournaments...

This is the first new state record fish, according to the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation, in over two years... but the ODWC website is notoriously neglected in terms of stuff that won't catch you a fine. It'll be updated someday to reflect this new record.

It's also worth mentioning, this fall has been a very productive season for fishing. With our lingering warm days, the lakes are staying warm a lot longer this year, which is great for anglers.

Why This Fall Has Been Perfect for Fishing

While the forecast suggests fall is actually going to sink into the Sooner State by Sunday, which will flip the switch on bass gobbling up plastic craws, our fishing days will likely linger on into late November.

For what it's worth, nobody knows what the weather is doing this season. We've had how many "last 90°" days so far the last two months, and in all likelihood, while a cold front is sweeping in, the odds are just as good of more 90°+ weather as the potential for a snap ice storm.

Point being, don't get too wrapped up in planning your next outing. Just go when you have the chance, because you know Oklahoma... When the season decides to change, it's abrupt and instantaneous.

Oklahoma's Ten Best Fishing Lakes

If you know, you know. When it comes to fishing, not all lakes are equal. While you can fish and catch fish in just about every body of water in the Sooner State, there are only a handful of lakes Oklahoma anglers get serious about.

Here are the top fishing lakes in Oklahoma.
