HBO Max Revives ‘Vacation’ with TV Spinoff ‘The Griswolds’
Upcoming streaming platform HBO Max has already started working on adapting the Vacation franchise for the small screen. The show will be titled The Griswolds, and will follow the famous family on their post-vacation misadventures in their suburban Chicago home. Leading the project is Johnny Galecki, known for his role as Leonard Hofstadter on The Big Bang Theory. Now that the massively popular comedy show has wrapped up its twelfth and final season this year, Galecki is tackling The Griswolds with writer Tim Hobert (The Middle). The show will be produced by Galecki’s own Alcide Bava Productions and Warner Bros. TV.
National Lampoon’s Vacation is a 1983 road comedy film that stars Chevy Chase as Clark Griswold, a man who becomes obsessed with giving his family the vacation of their dreams at Walley World, “America’s Favorite Family Fun Park.” Based off a short story written by John Hughes, the movie spawned a series of sequels as well as a 2015 soft reboot, titled simply Vacation. Galecki played Clark’s son Rusty in 1989’s National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation. (Rusty and Clark’s daughter Audrey were played by different actors in each movie.)
Because WarnerMedia owns HBO, HBO Max will debut already stocked with all 12 seasons of The Big Bang Theory. This will either make you very happy or make you wish to throw your TV out the window. From there, the $15/month streaming platform will include reboots of Warners-owned Gossip Girl and Gremlins, just to name a few. The Griswolds, which will air as a single-camera, half-hour comedy, is the latest franchise to get revived from the dead. HBO Max seems to be following the example of Disney+, who is tapping into their past repertoire to hone in on their pre-existing audiences.
