Aerosmith and rapper Post Malone closed MTV's 2018 VMAs with a dual performance that nobody saw coming. Malone opened the segment with his hit single "Rockstar" alongside fellow rapper 21 Savage. At the end of the song, the stage rose and Malone played guitar and sang on both "Dream On" and "Toys in the Attic" with the rest of Aerosmith.

2017's VMAs had the show's lowest ratings since Nielsen began tracking ratings in 1994; this year, MTV was clearly looking to the legendary rock act to keep fans watching until the end of the show. Gossip site TMZ had reported earlier in the day that the band would be closing the event.

Malone won the VMA for Song of the Year with "Rockstar." Aerosmith, on the other hand, took the stage following their recent Today Show appearance, during which Steven Tyler had to fight off an overzealous selfie-taking fan; the band have been out in support of their upcoming Las Vegas residency. The rock and roll icons will be taking over the Park Theater at the new Park MGM resort in Las Vegas for their "Aerosmith: Deuces Are Wild" event next year.
