Oklahoma Ranked One of the Worst States for Raising Kids
Oklahoma was recently listed among the worst American states to raise children, ranked 43rd out of all 50 states.
While some will read just the headline and agree, several metrics went into determining which US states would be favorable or not.
The real killers for Oklahoma in this study are median income and the unfortunate breakdown of the family unit.
High violent crime rates, expensive health care, and low public education ratings don't help either.
Out of the 50 states, Oklahoma scores:
- 45th highest percentage of divorce/separation.
- 43rd highest percentage of families in poverty.
- 38th highest percentage of violent crimes.
- 33rd highest infant mortality rate.
- 27th highest unemployment rate.
- 26th highest child care cost.
Even when you adjust the average income for the cost of living, Oklahoma scores poorly across the board.
All the same, the study isn't without argument.
While Oklahoma is rated towards the bottom, people tend to question how states with sky-high costs of living ranked so high... New England states like Massachusetts, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, New Jersey, etc...
It's all in the metrics.
