Lawton Wolverine Head Coach Randy Breeze has not always had his halftime speeches followed as planned after giving them, but Friday night his Wolverines stuck to his script and it paid off in 32-14 win over the visiting Stillwater Pioneers.

With a 12-7 lead at the break, the Lawton coach told his charges they were going to have to come out and beat Stillwater in the trenches, score quickly and hold the Pioneers defensively an just simply pound away on the ground. His soldiers pounded away at a weary Stillwater defense, but it took a strong defensive effort to seal a victory and stay perfect in District 6A(II)-2 action.

Both teams came in at 4-1 overall but on this night there was no comparison, the Wolverines were bigger, faster and stronger. Granted Stillwater was playing without its starting quarterback, Brooks Zimmerman, injured in the first game of the season, but it may not have mattered who was back there the way the LHS was playing defense.

Stillwater rushed for just 107 yards and backup quarterback Marlan McDonald hit just 5 of 15 passes for 63 yards. McDonald, who entered the season as a running back, seamed to be simply lobbing the ball downfield, hoping that a Pioneer receiver could run under a rainbown, but two of his lobs were hauled in by Wolverines, including a clinching interception by Chris Jones with five minutes remaining in the game.

The Wolverines rushed for 298 yards, 217 of those by Darreyl Patterson on 33 tough carries. Patterson scored all five Wolverine touchdowns.

Stillwater drew first blood when senior Jordan Brown blocked a punt and returned it for a touchdown. The Wolverines quickly answered; Darreyl Patterson converted a first down with a 15-yard run, followed by a Stillwater was called for a personal foul and moved the ball to the 14. Patterson capped off the drive with a 6-yard touchdown run but the Pioneers still held the lead as the kick failed. Caitlyn Cox seemed rushed on the attempt and her kick flew under the crossbar, her first true miss of the season.

The Pioneers then drove into Lawton territory on their next drive, but Marlon McDonald fumbled and was tackled for a seven-yard loss and Stillwater had to punt. Stillwater struggled to bring down Patterson as he rushed for 32 yards on two carries. The running back finished the drive with a 9-yard touchdown and gave the Wolverines a 12-7 lead which it carried into halftime.

The Wolverines never looked back in the second half as Patterson added touchdown runs of 13, 12 and 49 yards. The lone second half score for Stillwater came on a 21 yard run by Cameron Mayberry. Other than in the MacArthur game, this is the only touchdown allowed by the first team Wolverine defense all season.

The game was delayed at two points during the contest, starting with a 45 minute weather delay caused by thunderstorm activity in the area. The teams rejoined the action as the lightening passed, but as the third quarter wound down, the lights at Cameron Stadium went black, leading to a 10 minute delay while the towers were brought back on-lined and warmed up.

The Lawton Wolverines are back in action Thursday night as the "travel" to take cross-town rival Eisenhower Eagles at Cameron Stadium. You can catch all the action, including the Wolverine Pre-game Show starting at 6:45 on Z94 and Z94.com.
