Even some of the best metal albums have a weak spot here or there, but these 10 are solid from beginning to end. There are a ton of albums we could have included in this list, but we chose to spotlight some of our personal favorites that have stood the test of time.

Tool’s catalogue will always be heavily debated, especially when fans are picking a favorite between Aenima and Lateralus. When it comes to this list, however, Aenima was our choice for the more consistent album. Aenima is all killer, no filler from the hit “Stinkfist” to the epic “Third Eye.”

No modern metal band has created more conceptual masterpieces than Mastodon. Their 2000s holy trinity — Leviathan, Blood Mountain and Crack the Skye — set them apart from their new millennium contemporaries, with Crack the Skye often argued as godhead for the Georgia band. It’s Mastodon’s most fluid concept album, taking fans on a wild trip that never feels boring at any moment.

Let’s give some love to Cynic for a minute. When the prog metal band first released Focus, they would get booed off stage at death metal shows. Few bands had ever attempted to weave beauty into the genre, so Cynic proved to be far before their time, breaking up before their debut album was fully appreciated by metalheads. Nearly three decades later, Focus is viewed as a masterwork that brought the genre forward during a time when many claimed metal to be dead.
