How Windy Is Oklahoma Compared To Other States

It has been very windy in Oklahoma lately. Not just a breezy afternoon here and there. Day after day wind. South wind one day, then a hard north wind the next. We're not even into the heart of storm season yet.

As crazy as it is across Oklahoma, it could be worse.

Parts of Wyoming recently saw winds averaging around 110 miles per hour. That's the average from their last windy super-storm. The town of Surprise got a big one with gusts reaching 123 mph.

That is insane.

Videos are all over social media show semi trucks tipping over on the highway during those winds. Of course, TikTok being TikTok, the edits of a yawning truck laying down to take a nap are hilarious... but I'm sure anyone connected to the trucking industry might not see it that way. So yes, Oklahoma has been windy, but Wyoming just reminded everyone what extreme wind actually looks like. It feels like a good time to look at where the windiest places in America are. Oklahoma is definitely a windy state, but we don't hold the title of windiest in the country. We're solidly at #8. Alaska holds the spot, mostly because it's so huge and features such varied terrain... It's coastal storms, mountainous, has plains, bordered by two oceans, wind is not surprising in The Last Frontier. Among the lower 48 states, Wyoming usually gets the attention, but the high wind events are pretty limited. The high plains of Texas earn the top spot, Oklahoma City ranks among the top ten.
