Mail Carriers Turn Into Heroes For Lawton’s Hungry Families

Lawton residents may have noticed this morning that they received a grocery bag in their mail box. It's no accident and it's not trash, it's actually an easy opportunity for residents to give back to their community.

Saturday, May 9, is the annual National Association of Letter Carriers' Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive, and Lawton residents can use the grocery bag they received in their mail box to make a donation.

Donations from Lawton residents during the Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive will benefit the Lawton Food Bank.

When Lawton residents set out their non-perishable donations in or near the mailbox on Saturday, their local mail carrier won't be delivering their donations very far. All donations made by Lawton residents will go right to the Lawton Food Bank, benefitting their local neighbors.

Lawton residents are encouraged to donate pantry staples.

The Lawton Food Bank and the National Association of Letter Carriers encourage Lawton residents to fill their bags with pantry staples. Donations should be non-perishable items. Most needed items include canned meats, meat-based soups, canned fruits, canned vegetables, peanut butter, rice, beans and jelly.

Lawton residents who are planning on donating should fill their bags with their donations at set them near their mailboxes by Saturday and their mail carrier will take care of the rest!

The Lawton Food Bank stepped up to take care of families affected by the government shutdown in 2025.

Last fall, many Lawton residents and families were directly affected by the government shutdown. Several people went without multiple paychecks for 43 days, right before the holidays. Many families were affected like never before, and had to rely on local resources they had never needed prior, including the Lawton Food Bank.

During this time, the Lawton Food Bank held special food drives and distributions specifically for those affected by the government shutdown. Thanks to the Lawton Food Bank and neighbors who donated, many Lawton families didn't have to go without food. And as times continue to be hard for everyone, it's important to support local organizations like the Lawton Food Bank, because you never know who will need their help and when, including yourself.
