Oklahoma's second-favorite son Joe Exotic just announced that he's running for president again. He's hoping to sweep the 2024 elections from his campaign headquarters at the United States Penitentiary--Atlanta.

From the official JoeExotic2024 website:

Thank you for your interest in my Campaign. Yes, I know I am in Federal Prison and you might think this is a joke but it's not. It is my Constitutional right to do this even from here.

Most people remember Joe from his wildly popular Tiger King series that was released on Netflix in the early days of the Covid-19 pandemic, but he previously ran for Office of the President in 2016 and as a candidate for Oklahoma governor prior to that.

Can a felon run for president?

As it turns out, there are only three rules set forth in the constitution for being elected to the highest office in America.

  • You must be a natural-born citizen of America
  • You must be at least 35 years old
  • You must live in America for at least 14 years

There is nothing about having a criminal record in the requirements for any federally elected office in the US, including congress.

If that wasn't wild enough, Joe's not even the first convict to be running for the office. Three others have run a handful of campaigns over the years, one of which actually garnered thousands of votes here in Oklahoma.

A man named Keith Judd ran for POTUS from his federal penitentiary in 2008 and 2012 on a few Democrat primary ballots. He ran again while released under supervision in 2016 and managed to get 4,386 votes here in Oklahoma.

Lyndon LaRouche also ran one of his presidential campaigns from a federal prison cell. He was incarcerated for credit card and mail fraud, though he claimed his charges were politically fabricated by the enemies he made during his tenure in DC politics.

There was another that ran a campaign from federal prison, Eugene Debs. He was convicted on 10 counts of sedition for his activism against the draft of WWI.

What would happen if Joe Exotic actually won?

There is no metaphorical map in the constitution to guide us on how to handle such an event. As such, winning the presidential election wouldn't automatically guarantee his release, nor could he pardon himself for his convictions.

For all intents and purposes, Joe would have to run the country from his cell until DC decided what to do with him. Given his outspokenness against the "corrupt" federal authorities that put him behind bars, DC would likely take their sweet time... which is equally as odd since Joe Exotic would probably fit right in.

It's also worth mentioning that he has about as good of odds as Kanye West did in 2020. Here's a link to his official campaign website.
