Summer may be both heating up and winding down at the same time, but there's still time to squeeze in a little fun at the OKC Zoo.

The whole place is filled with more than 60 life-sized dinosaurs.

If you've been to the Great Plains Museum in Lawton, you've had a taste of an exhibit like this, but the Zoo is doing it on a much larger scale.

I fully admit, somehow this one slipped under my radar until I saw it on social media. The weather has just been so nice to this point, there hasn't been a reason not to spend a day at the refuge... But if you want the kids to get a new sort of experience before school starts again, the OKC Zoo's Dinosaur Expedition is it.

Jurassic Oklahoma

As you make your way through the Zoo, you'll run into towering dinosaurs that move and roar to life, with plenty of places to stop for photos along the way.

What I think sets the Zoo's thing apart is that this isn't just a bunch of giant dinosaur props. The exhibit also points out which modern animals are the closest living relatives to the dinosaurs. It's one of those sneaky ways to get your kids learning without them realizing it.

The only downside is, this late in the summer, it's oppressively hot. Triple-digit temps now through the rest of the forecast, and because Oklahoma does Oklahoma things, the 100°+ days will likely linger into the start of school... But, there's really no rush to see it. The exhibit sticks around until November, which might be the better plan since you could mesh your own Dinosaur Expedition with the Halloween Haunt the Zoo fun too.

One big seasonal attraction rolls right into the next.

If you've been looking for something different to do before summer winds down, this is probably one of the more unique trips you can make without leaving Oklahoma.

If you want something eye-opening, educational, but still air-conditioned for the kids, you might hit the bone museum over in Moore. It's spectacular for all.

Unique Things to Do in Oklahoma City

There is no shortage of things to do in OKC. While there are a handful of things everyone knows about--OKC Zoo, Myriad Gardens, Bricktown, etc-- there are even more lesser-known places to experience one-of-a-kind Oklahomaness. Some things cost a little money, others are completely free, but it's all fun for the whole family.
