Every Oklahoman loves a good tall tale. Our social lives tend to run on them. Bigfoot sightings, ghost lights, haunted bridges, lake monsters... If it lives in the woods, somebody will swear they've seen it at least once.

Enter the Texoma Dog Man.

If you’ve never been down that Google rabbit hole, you must have a healthy relationship with the internet. This legend floats around North Texas and Southern Oklahoma, mostly among the tin-foil hat clubs, but the creature gets described as a giant upright canine. Part wolf, part man, part “I swear this happened to my uncle in 1997.”

Normally this is where the story would stay. Campfire territory. Fun. Harmless. Filed next to “weird noises in the woods.”

But then a real story hits the news and suddenly your very smart brain starts telling you some really dumb things.

Recently, a 38-year-old Oklahoma woman was critically injured after being attacked by an "unidentified animal" up in Pittsburg County. As horrible as that is, it gets weird.

Nobody can decide what kind of animal attacked her. They're even testing DNA from her clothing to try to figure out if it was a dog, mountain lion, bear, or something else entirely.

She reported hearing a deep growl before the attack.

And this is where Oklahoma brains split into two camps.

Camp one says mountain lion. They’ve been slowly creeping back into the state for years. Wildlife officials confirm sightings all the time. We even confirmed that Oklahoma is part of the big cat reproductive cycle... but it's not that simple. They're really skittish when it comes to humans. Then again, a momma cat might not be one to back away.

Camp two says bear. Black bears have also been expanding their territory across eastern Oklahoma. They’re big, they’re strong, and they absolutely can cause catastrophic injuries... but they're usually pretty mild and run from humans.

Then there's camp three. The fun camp that says, “Well… there is another possibility.”

Which brings us to the Texoma Dog Man.

Look, nobody is saying a cryptid is roaming the countryside tackling people. Real life is almost always less dramatic than folklore. But when officials literally say “we don’t know what animal did this yet,” the human imagination immediately clocks in for overtime.

Odds are this ends with a very real, very normal animal being identified.

But until the DNA results come back, somewhere out there, the Dog Man crowd is feeling extremely validated.
