Grocery Prices Finally Dropping As Summer Approaches In Oklahoma
Just in time for summer, it looks like grocery prices are starting to come down across Oklahoma.
As I was doing my normal weekly shopping, I noticed prices on the things I regularly buy are down from the historic highs we've experienced over the last four years. This is great news for all of us, especially those with kids at home for the season.
Now, the government has been talking about lowering inflation for months, and while that's all good, it would be foolhardy to trust the word of the government. But, when prices at stores start to reflect what the administration has been saying, that's when you can start to believe it.
With the latest report, inflation is at its lowest point since March of 2021 - 2.3% if you trust the math. Obviously, that number isn't the best representation of the most common things we purchase throughout the month. Groceries are still slated higher at 2.8%, but May 2025 is the first time I've noticed rollbacks in prices on the foods and goods I buy normally.
I noticed it earlier this week, walking through Aldi, but figured it was a sale or something. Then I noticed the same thing while adding goods in the Walmart app.
Everything from soda to fruit, produce, cereals and chips, snacks, and lunchmeats are down anywhere from 10¢ to $1 per item.
It's even more surprising considering how the news media has warned that the exact opposite would happen as a result of President Trump's game of tariffs.
After a quick dive down into the annals of inflation, the next question I asked myself was "If energy is down so much, why was gas suddenly $3 a gallon over the holiday weekend?" but upon inspection today at my local fuelery, it was $2.49 for lower-quality ethanol fuel. Still, that's right in the ballpark of where it was leading up to the pandemic.
If we could just manage to get fuel to the pandemic prices, +/-$1.29, without the actual pandemic, I believe summer would be full of American family road trips. Well have to wait to see what happens, nobody can predict the future, but the light at the end of the tunnel is getting brighter.
