Oklahoma Is In Line For A Multi-Day Soaker From Hurricane Polo
Nearly every Oklahoma meteorologist is predicting a good multi-day soaker rain, and some downright cold overnight temperatures will fall across Oklahoma this week. Leave it to the Sooner State weather patterns to be so dramatic for a late seasonal change.
Here's what's happening.
Hurricane Polo's Moisture Is Headed For Oklahoma
Hurricane Polo, one of the strongest storms ever measured in that part of the Pacific, is about to hitch a ride on a big dip in the jet stream. As that cold front sweeps into the Southern Plains, it's going to pull all of Polo's moisture into our region.
When they started talking about this happening last Friday, the odds of getting any of that moisture were low, tracking mostly toward New Mexico, Colorado, and the panhandles, but just like things do, everything is falling into line to give Oklahoma a great multi-day soaker event where we need it most.
All the same, there's a bit of an argument among meteorologists, and it's generally too early to tell, but there's an equal chance this turns into a flooded mess. The ground is so dry in Western OK, it would be a disaster. It seems like more meteorologists align with this outlook everyday after the weekend.
Cold Temperatures Too For Oklahoma
On top of that, the strong dip in the jet stream is going to push in like a big cold front, bringing some chilly overnight temps to the Sooner State. Lows in the 40s in some places across the northern portions of the state.
While it's hard to look beyond the immediate couple of days ahead, they are also talking about next weekend being the start to what we consider a very normal fall in Oklahoma. Daily highs in the 70s, cool breezes, and that usual trend of hoodies in the morning, shorts in the afternoon.
With the little bit of rain we got at the end of last week and over the weekend, hopefully this wet pattern will put a big dent in the drought and maybe allow some of the nearly statewide burn bans to expire. I mean, what's the point of a chilly fall night if you can't put a little wood in the fire pit, right?
Just like everything that is Oklahoma weather any time of year, it is to be taken with a grain of salt. Nothing is in stone. Anything can change. It could realistically jump back to the upper 90s just as quickly... but we'll take this very positive outlook for the moment.
