Not A Deer, One Oklahoma Driver Hit A Kangaroo On A County Road
When it comes to driving around Oklahoma, there are a few real and present dangers we accept in normal everyday life.
The first obstacle that most people envision is our population of deer. They're big, dumb, and probably add +/-$3,000,000 to our state economy each year through ever-increasing repairs.
The second danger on our Oklahoma roads is the actual Oklahoma roads. While vast improvements have been made at the state level of repair regarding bridges and such, county and municipal roads are still on par with cruising through any other war-torn Middle Eastern country.
There are the occasional animals that wander onto roads too... dogs, cats, coyotes, bobcats, opossums, etc... but who would have thought an Oklahoma driver would make headlines by hitting a kangaroo?
That's exactly what happened to one Sooner State driver in Sequoyah County--Sallisaw area, I-40 out by the Arkansas line. It apparently just jumped out in front of him.
As most animal-vs-vehicle collisions go, the kangaroo didn't survive.
What is a kangaroo doing in Oklahoma?
Turns out, while this deadly wreck may be a first for Oklahoma, kangaroos aren't as rare here as you'd assume. There have been tons of reports in recent years of kangaroos getting out and roaming the state. Lots of reports. Some people like to keep them as pets.
There are even stories of hunters luring kangaroos into their area during peak season. Emu's too--emu farming used to be huge in the 80s.
So the next time you're out and about in the country, keep a wandering eye out for the next big worry for Oklahoma drivers.
