Oklahoma’s ‘Drunkest’ Town Isn’t One You’d Expect
When it comes to the perception of Oklahoma towns that are known for heavy partying, there are a handful of usual suspects that enter the chat.
- Stillwater (OSU)
- Norman (OU)
- Lawton (Fort Sill)
- Pryor (Rocklahoma/Born & Raised Festivals)
- Hollis (but only in secrecy)
At one point in time, only a few years ago, Lawton was considered the #1 college party town in the state. None of us know how it came to be declared, and we all raised an eyebrow at the notion, but that's what the metrics said.
When I think of places you go in the Sooner State to have an excessively good time, I key in on Stilly. It has a massive population of youths who are out on their own, having their first taste of adult freedom, and all the stars align in the bustling party scene.
I'm sure Norman has a similar scene too. Lawton can get down, with a large population of hard-partying military members, a small college, and nothing else to do, the bars are full a few nights each week as well as thousands of packed-in rent houses.
None of those places was bestowed the title of the drunkest town in the state.
Where, then?
Enid, Oklahoma.
Did your eyebrow just raise?
According to VinePair, Enid is home to the largest percentage of excessive drinkers in the whole state. By the metrics, 15.2% of the population drinks to excess regularly throughout the average month.
Does that mean there are more people drinking in Enid than in Stillwater? No, but by percentage of the total population, I guess so.
What is in Enid?
Back in the 90s, Enid was the closest orthodontist to my family. It was also the closest Chick-fil-A to us, back when you could only get your nuggies at a mall food court.
Vance Air Force Base is in Enid. It's where our armed forces (Air Force, Navy, & Marine) pilots go to learn how to be the best.
Enid is also known as the grain capital of Oklahoma. Big-time farming operations out there, as well as a lot of oil and gas.
There are a few colleges there also, NOC and NWOSU both operate satellite campuses in town. Atwoods has its headquarters there, and it's an impressive store to walk through.
Other than that, it's likely boredom driving people to consume a good night and a miserable next day.
