Oklahoma’s Getting A Permanent Mexican Consulate
In 2021, Mexico has decided to extend consular services for their citizens living and traveling in America by adding two additional consulates in the US, one of which will open in Oklahoma City.
If you're curious already as to what a consulate does, you're not alone. A consulate is a diplomatic mission that acts as an extension to a countries embassy. The Mexican Embassy is in Washington DC, but the USA is so large, they need satellite offices to help maintain the services they provide their citizens. The consulate-general is normally a politician charged with running the operation that serves that countries citizens traveling abroad in that region.
As there are over 100,000 people of direct Mexican descent living in OKC, it's only natural that our capital city extends this courtesy to Mexico.
OKC Mayor David Holt said:
In Oklahoma City alone, there are over 106,000 residents of Mexican descent. The prominence of the OKC Mexican-American community is growing locally and nationally, it was absolutely time for a Mexican consulate in Oklahoma City, and I thank all the people who advocated for it, and the Mexican government for its commitment.
A location for the Mexican consulate has not yet been determined, and as Governor Stitt is traveling to Mexico to knock out key details of this deal, it's still too early to start the planning just yet according to other officials.
If you're curious, there is one other international consulate in OKC... the Consulate General of Guatemala is housed just off the Northwest Expressway.
