OU Softball Missing The WCWS Feels Wrong In Oklahoma
For almost a decade, Oklahoma softball has felt less like a college sports program and more like some kind of government-funded experiment in dominance. Every spring, you just automatically penciled the Sooners into Oklahoma City for the Women’s College World Series and moved on with your life.
That’s just what Patti Gasso built at the University of Oklahoma. An absolute softball empire. Eight national championships. Four straight titles from 2021 through 2024. Seasons where they lost so little it started to feel mathematically suspicious.
But now? The softball universe feels crooked.
OU won’t be making the trip to the College Women’s World Series. No crimson flood in OKC. No inevitable late-inning comeback. For the first time since 2015, the Sooners will be watching the series from home.
Part of it is because OU softball became one of those permanent fixtures in Oklahoma life. Like Braum’s. Or tornado sirens. You just assumed they’d always be there in late May and early June, ruining somebody else’s season.
Instead, the Sooners got bounced, and now the transfer portal has started humming like a casino slot machine.
Multiple players have reportedly entered the portal since the season-ending loss, including depth pieces and pitchers, while Patti Gasso is already rebuilding the roster again through portal additions of her own.
That’s the strange new reality of college sports now. Dynasties don’t slowly fade anymore. Rosters change up overnight like somebody hit “quick pick” on an NCAA lottery game.
And maybe this is just the natural cycle finally catching up to OU after years of terrifying the rest of college softball. Maybe it’s nothing more than a reload year after one of the greatest runs the sport has ever seen.
Nothing lasts forever, but it sure was nice to see OU winning national titles in a sport for so long.
Still, betting against Patti Gasso feels a little like rage-baiting against gravity. People have tried it for twenty years. It usually ends with OU coming out victorious, again and again.
For the moment, the softball world is going to feel upside down.
