Earlier this morning while browsing the interwebs and checking out Facebook a post came across my newsfeed from the Lawton Grapevine about the old Taft Grocery. Remember the Taft store? If so, then like me I'm sure you miss going there, it was the best! I loved Taft Grocery and wish they were still open.

The picture and post from the Grapevine had several likes and comments. Everyone agrees, we want it reopened and we all miss going there. If you're new to Lawton, Fort Sill, or you've never heard of Taft Grocery it was basically a little convenience store in the middle of a neighborhood at 1615 N.W. Taft Ave. in Lawton.

When I was younger we'd go there all the time for candy, they had just about everything you could think of and you could even buy it a piece at a time! For a lot of us Taft was Lawton's original candy store back in the day. They also had some of the best meats around. Inside the store near the back, they had a butcher shop and mini meat market. We'd always stop in and grab some meats, drinks, and other supplies for the weekend.

Wishing it was still open. Taft Grocery at 1615 N.W. Taft Avenue in Lawton, OK.

A few years ago back in 2020, there was a rumor going around town that Taft Grocery was reopening. Needless to say, it created a lot of excitement as everyone really misses it. Unfortunately, the rumors were just that, rumors. Or maybe the pandemic and everything else that's happened over the past couple of years could have slowed it down and delayed its reopening. I hope it's the latter and the rumors become reality.

I tried looking up when it closed but couldn't really find anything official. I don't remember exactly when it shut down, I just remember pulling up one day and it was closed permanently. Since then and more than a few times, especially when gathered around the grill or BBQ pit, the subject of Taft Grocery comes up and everyone I know wishes it was still open. And after seeing it on the Lawton Grapevine this morning on Facebook so do a lot of other people in Lawton. So deep down I think we all want the rumor to be true!

If you're reading this and have any connection to the rumor, owners, family, or maybe you're involved with Traft Grocery somehow and are considering reopening, you have our full and complete support! To those of us who remember it, we all wish it was still around. No one had better meats and no one had a better selection of snacks, candy, and soft drinks than Taft Grocery store. Please, please, pretty please, reopen it!
