After a week of hearing a couple of Boomer's talk about how coronavirus is just a liberal hoax and that they refuse to wear masks in public, I've gathered my thoughts enough on it to make a solid attempt to convince them. No politics, no spin, no attempt to evoke an emotional reaction, just what I feel is solid advice.

It seems the most common talking point among people that refuse to wear a mask in public is the fact that they haven't changed how they live their life and haven't caught the rona yet. This seems like a shortsighted way of looking at a persons luck. We're four months into a pandemic with a virus that's never affected humans before, so naturally, there isn't a whole lot of scientific information available, and the little information available tends to change as discoveries are made. That's the scientific process. We do know, this virus doesn't affect every person the same. Perhaps it's specific to certain DNA traits in the individual, maybe it's different strains, the science isn't conclusive, yet. So if you haven't caught coronavirus yet, that doesn't mean you won't.

Another common talking point is that people don't like being told what to do. I get that. America was founded by rebels that didn't like being told what to do. There's nothing more American than fighting back against The Man... but at some point, you have to consider your own health and well being into the argument. Science has learned in the last four months that this virus spreads like the common cold. It's not something you can easily pick up off a hard surface, it's spread in the moisture of your breath. That's fact. Now think about how many colds you've had in your life... Every time you walk among your countrymen, you're breathing in their exhaled breath and vice versa. Even if you feel that this virus is "just a flu" or "just a cold," remember how much it sucks having either of them now that you know how easy it is to catch it. You want to know why they banned smoking and vaping in casinos across the country? It's because you can see the breath. They don't care if you are safe, they want you to feel safe as you lose your money. If you can't see it, it doesn't exist right?

Lastly, there is an abnormally large amount of people out there that say how dangerous wearing a mask is for their own health. To be fair, I'm sure there are individuals out there that could suffer adverse effects from wearing a mask for too long. My standard response to that is to point out that a lot of people wear masks all day, every day. Not just the hoards of nurses, doctors, and healthcare workers across these great states, but other professional blue-collar workers too. Welders, carpenters, painters, farmers, etc... They all wear masks all day doing what white-collar workers call "hard work." And it's not like they're wearing them for a "while" or just "when they need it." Most of these workers are wearing masks and respirators for ten to fourteen hours a day, four to six days each week. That's probably the biggest hypocrisy among those that can't stomach wearing a very breathable mask for twenty minutes while they get their groceries. If you're the type of person that's so delicate and weak that you can't wear a mask, odds are you aren't going out in public anyway. You might consider not spreading that propaganda on social media.

Don't get me wrong, I fully believe everyone on this planet will catch coronavirus as some point, I'm just not looking to speed up the process. I'd rather wait to be cavalier until science has some sort of treatment or preventative. And I totally get it... I don't like wearing my mask either... but I'm not about to let my all-American rebelious streak of independence roll the dice on whether I'd be heavily affected or asymptomatic contracting a virtually unknown virus. I won't even try to guilt you into wearing a mask for the sake of others. American's are selfish. I am too. It's part of the American spirit... so perhaps you should wear your mask for the selfish reason that you don't want to catch the so-called bat disease. If we were all that selfish, we might be experiencing a pandemic like Italy, Spain, or even New Zealand... They're wrapping up theirs with extremely low numbers while we've opted for a second wave to that every Chad and Karen could get their hair cut and nails done.
