A Third Internet Option Is Soon Coming To Lawton
Historically, AT&T has been an internet service provider to America since the earliest days of the web. They've been around forever. I briefly had their service when I lived close to downtown years ago, but when I moved to a more central location, well, the service was abhorrent.
When I talked to a friend in the local internet industry he said AT&T currently (and for the previous decade or so) could only provide internet to customers within a couple of blocks of their hub sites in Lawton. One location is at Gore & 17th Street, the other is way out near 82nd and Rogers Lane.
Due to the archaic and ever-aging grid they had been operating since the internet became a thing, the service area continued to shrink as bandwidth demands increased. I suppose it's better to offer stellar service to a few rather than terrible service to many. Thankfully, with the commitment to install fiber, all that is changing right now.
AT&T has been hard at work installing a new fiber-optic grid with plans to spread it all across this town with the promise to offer blazing fast internet speeds at a price lower than the other two providers in town.
AT&T Fiber will offer five different speeds at different price points. Their 1Gig service will be available for $80 per month. That's $27 less than the current Lawton ISP giant Fidelity Communications, but there's more competition coming. '
BluePeak made a splash with their announcement and groundbreaking here in town. They plan to offer a 1Gig service to residents for only $65 per month, but it comes with a service agreement contract. There's no way to tell how that's going to play out in a military town where half the population moves regularly on short notice.
While there's no expectation on when the AT&T Fiber project is due to be complete, all Lawtonians should enjoy finally having a choice of internet service providers in the near future.
