Cosmic Baseball Lit Up Bricktown Ballpark And It Was Pure Chaos
Glow-in-the-dark baseball is becoming a real thing in America right now. What started with the Savannah Bananas turning baseball into entertainment has opened the door for even wilder versions of the sport, and this weekend that trend landed in Oklahoma City when Cosmic Baseball took over Bricktown Ballpark.
It was unlike anything you could possibly imagine.
Here's how Sunday's game went.
It all began as any other regular baseball game. Bright lights and a competitive angle between two teams.
After the first batter or two, the show really started.
The teams don't typically hang out in the dugouts, they stand on the field. And while some people watch the game, the kids in particular like to watch what's going on everywhere else.
The crowd of kids was in a constant roar as players on the bench kept throwing out baseballs to fans... which is every kid's dream, to walk away from a ballpark with a game ball.
I'll admit, at one point I was more engaged in watching the pickleball game happening in left field than anything happening at the plate. And to be fair, the play on the field was more akin to baseball in the same way WWF is to real wrestling. Entertaining, random, and full of fantastic chaos that absolutely captivated every tablet-kid in attendance.
Just like what is popular in the baseball action sports trend of focusing more on laughs and entertainment rather than the game, Cosmic Baseball sets itself apart from all others by offering up middle-class-affordable tickets and by playing the game in the dark, under the black lights. Everything from the uniforms to the baselines and balls is neon, so it all glows really bright.
The kids loved it as is, but then the lights went out.
After three innings of baseball, when the sun was finally down and a weirdly long intermission, they counted down to Cosmic Baseball time, at which point the lights were turned off, and the neon glow became the only thing you could see.
There were a lot of silly and weird rules to Cosmic Baseball, but they worked to make the game engaging and entertaining for everyone there. They even had a home run derby between the neon innings that counted toward the final score of the game.
We couldn't keep track of how many innings were played. The scoreboard operators were as lost as all of us, but in the end, the Glow-Mojis in neon yellow won their game against the neon pink Chili Peppers 25-12.
It was an exciting experience that we'll likely take in again if they ever come back through OKC.
