Last Friday night (06-07-13) Southern Heretics stopped by the studios and hung out with us for Z94's 'Local Licks @ Six'. Despite being on a tight schedule they still made time to be a part of the show. As our featured artist on the program we finally had the opportunity to talk with the band and play a few cuts off their new album 'Hydra' before they took to the stage at the Railhead Saloon later that night. It was great catching up with the band and it's always a good time talking music and influences. An entertaining conversation both on and off air!

Hailing from Duncan, Marlow, Comanche and other scattered parts of Stephens County Southern Heretics have made their presence known throughout Southwest Oklahoma and beyond! They've quickly earned the respect of other local and regional artists, as well as the  reputation as a premier live act.

Although I've never had the opportunity to see them live, I look forward to it. While I haven't been in attendance to witness the Heretics in action, I have spent some quality time watching some of there videos from past performances. Sure it's not the same thing as being there in person, but it does serve as a powerful testament or documentation of what happens when these four guys get together, plug in and let loose!

SOUTHERN HERETICS CAPTURED LIVE AT THE RAILHEAD IN LAWTON, OK.

With influences that range from hard rock, metal to classic country and everything in between it's a melting pot of styles and genres, that when mixed together create a volatile mixture of melody and sound. Citing Black Sabbath, Metallica, Corrosion Of Conformity, Black Label Society, Johnny Cash and even Garth Brooks as artist they admire and are into, it's an  unusual list, but an amazing blend when these guys get on stage.

Everyone's influenced by something or someone, but not everyone or every band can take all those different influences and create a unique style and sound of their own. The Southern Heretics have done just that and more! They describe their sound as 'Drunken Metal' and I'd have to agree, that's pretty damn accurate.

It's a pleasant real approach to music making and a no nonsense, straight forward groove with a heavy dose of distortion that reminds us of how things use to be done. The vocals and songwriting are on track with the 'less produced the better' sound the Heretics bring through the speakers. It's a great mixture of southern fried metal, hard and classic rock with a touch of that swamp sound from NOLA that stands out. It familiar, but altogether different!

When they came by last Friday night they brought with them a sampling of their new album 'Hydra' which will hopefully be released sometime this year, possibly by Fall. Of course '3fer Madness' ensued and we played 3 tracks off the new disk. Most, if not all the songs we played were never released only heard live. Z94 was privileged to be the first to have access to these songs and play them for you. Check out the interview with the band and all the songs below:
