The assumption across the majority of Oklahoma has always been, make it through spring, you'll make it through the rest of the year.

Sure, summer can be oppressively hot sometimes, and the big northerlies push brutally windy cold fronts between Halloween and Christmas, but 2024 had a different idea.

It has been an Oklahoma November like none other across almost every square inch of Sooner State land.

Historic Rains

It's official. November 2024 is the wettest eleventh month on record for our state. It's also the 16th-wettest month ever in Oklahoma since records began in 1895.

When you add up all of the rainfall measurements across the state and divide it by our 77 counties, it's an average 7.85 inches.

Some areas had as little as 4 inches so far this month, others had almost a full foot of rain.

Historic Tornados Too

While every Oklahoman knows tornadoes can happen anytime of year when the conditions are right, they're pretty rare during the so-called "cold" months of November-February.

2024 isn't the first time twisters have touched down this time of year, but it's usually a one and done type of event. Oklahoma's November tornado average is 1.6 twisters per year.

November 2024 has produced 24 tornadoes so far, but nothing is expected through the rest of the month.

It's a new record, doubling the previous record of 12 twisters set back in November 1958.

What's to come?

It appears the remainder of November is going to be as unpredictable as the beginning was. The current forecast model is predicting snow in the days leading up to Thanksgiving.

...but you have to take this with a grain of salt. We all know how the forecast works in the Sooner State - look at it again tomorrow, it'll be completely different.

Then again, a snowstorm on the busiest travel day in Oklahoma would be right in our wheelhouse.
