The people of Sperry, Oklahoma woke up to a huge surprise as the Labor Day Weekend started. Crawdads have been popping up in yards, streets, and even parking lots like they own the town.

Like, literally everywhere.

Now, most of us are used to seeing these little freshwater crustaceans while fishing, but over the last couple of days, folks in Sperry are finding them on the morning walk to the mailbox.

Picture it: you’re still half-asleep, coffee in hand, and instead of the paperboy, there’s a small army of pinchers marching across your driveway.

Why now?

Well, crawdads live in burrows and ditches, and with the recent rains flooding low-lying areas, they’re getting flushed out of their burrows. Once the water moves, so do they. Think of it like a neighborhood block party they didn’t bother to RSVP for.

Of course, Oklahomans being Oklahomans, the reactions are split. Half the people are grossed out and convinced the apocalypse is starting in the form of tiny lobsters. The other half are eyeing the situation like it’s the beginning of a free backyard boil.

One man’s nuisance is another man’s Saturday night supper.

They're not hurting anything, they're just out of place, wandering across asphalt instead of creek beds. Given a little time, most will shuffle back toward water. But until then, Sperry has itself the weirdest headline in Oklahoma.
