When Will Oklahoma’s Heat Wave Finally Break?

Yesterday, Southwest Oklahoma recorded its 45th day above 100 degrees. The Dog Days of Summer have been super warm, but not the worst we've ever had.

That's not me putting a positive spin on the last month and a half of high temps, I just keep seeing memories in my newsfeed from 2014 and 2015 when the daily highs this time of year were way over 110 degrees.

All the same, while I'm sure you keep seeing 100-degree days plastered across your 10-day forecast, there is a light at the end of the tunnel.

Oklahoma Heat Wave: When Will Temperatures Cool Down?

In a rare occurrence, most weather sources agree that we'll punch back down into the 90s for daily highs on the other side of this month. August 19th through 25th-ish. Back to a normal end of a hot Oklahoma summer.

Of course, you have to take that with a grain of salt and a shot from the top shelf. Long-range predictions aren't always the most accurate, but it would follow the same trend as some of our hotter summers on record.

Even looking through the most optimistic pair of shades, it's still going to be hot. Mid to upper 90s, most likely through the first week or two of October... But you know as well as I do, we've trick-or-treated on a 100-degree Halloween before.

What El Niño Could Mean For Oklahoma’s Winter

With the El Niño that the media keeps describing as "Super" hitting its stride, the bigger question Oklahomans are probably wondering is, what does this mean for fall?

The last time we looked at the long-term projections for fall and winter 2026-2027, our swath of America was in the questionable column. It was a 50/50 toss-up between being really warm until next summer, or relatively normal... Nice with small periods of cold. Now the answer to that question is more unknown than it was a month ago.

Some weather outlets predict a winter on the warmer side with plenty of stormy, rainy weather. Others are making an even bolder prediction that we may see more than our fair share of ice and snow. Brutally cold.

The regional outlooks make a case for both. They're saying Oklahoma is likely to be a winter battle zone, where warm and stormy days turn into frigid week-long ice ages as we roll through January and February.

Don't plan on it. You know this drill. Oklahoma never sticks to the script.

Before we go making plans for fall and winter, let's just survive these last dozen Dog Days of Summer.
