Oklahoma’s Biggest Deer Hunting Event Is Back Next Month

One of the things I think Oklahoma does better than just about anywhere else is passing down hunting knowledge.

Sure, YouTube exists. You can spend hours watching people hunt monster bucks and talk way too much into the camera, but I'd much rather be in a room with people who have spent decades figuring out Oklahoma deer, right?

That's exactly what's coming up next month.

The Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation and Oklahoma Hunters and Anglers are bringing back DeerCon, a full-day deer hunting conference that's grown from a couple dozen people into one of the bigger gatherings of hunters in the state.

Who DeerCon Is Really For

And before you immediately think, "I've been hunting for 30 years. I don't need a class," you're not really who this is for. That said, you'll still benefit from it all the same.

This is really for the newbie hunters across Oklahoma, but everyone is still welcome.

If you've always wanted to try your hand at hunting deer, but don't have a clue how to start, this is for you. And there's no shame at all, nobody is born with knowledge.

I Learned the Hard Way

I didn't start hunting until I was 25 or so. My family wasn't big on hunting at all, so me and my cousin Matt just had to wing it. And we did. Sometimes we were successful, other times it was just me whispering out of boredom, and him shushing me to be quiet. Good times all around.

At DeerCon, they'll have around 35 different sessions covering just about every corner of deer hunting you can think of.

Everything from Deer Hunting 101 and finding a place to hunt to scouting, tracking, deer biology, bowhunting, field care of meat, ammo selection, and even the simple question of how deer actually think and move through the woods.

Industry experts, hunting organizations, vendors, and familiar hunting TV personalities will all be there throughout the day, making it feel more like a gathering of Oklahoma hunters than a classroom.

When and Where DeerCon Happens

Here are the details... Saturday, Aug. 15, at Metro Tech's Springlake Campus in OKC from 7:30 AM to 5:30 PM.

It does cost $50 but it includes lunch, all of the different sessions, chance to win door prizes, and a one-year membership to the Oklahoma Hunters and Anglers club.

The first 300 people through the door also get a free one-year HuntStand PRO subscription. Social media is already talking about how this event usually sells out early, so waiting until the last minute probably isn't the thing to do, even though that's the usual Oklahoma thing we do.
