Oklahoma Has More Fortune 500 Companies Than You Might Think
I think we all knew Oklahoma had some big companies. We're an oil and gas state, after all. Put a few pipelines, oil wells, and energy companies together and you're going to end up with some insanely high numbers.
What I wasn't expecting was how many of the biggest companies in America have a footprint right here in Oklahoma. And I don't mean some random company you've never heard of that has a warehouse in OKC metro... I'm talking about names you see all the time.
The Fortune 500 Is Bigger Than Oil And Gas
American Airlines.
Boeing.
Dell.
Dollar General.
Dollar Tree.
Lockheed Martin.
Northrop Grumman.
Raytheon.
Those are all Fortune 500 companies with Oklahoma locations, according to the Oklahoma Department of Commerce. The state's latest report tracks Fortune 500 companies with known operations in Oklahoma, and once you start looking through the list, it gets pretty easy to forget we're supposed to be a little state in the middle of the country that everybody flies over.
Now, before somebody starts counting companies and finds a different number than I did, let me lay out the distinction here... The Fortune 500 is based completely on revenue, and there's a difference between being headquartered in Oklahoma and just being here in the Sooner State.
Today, Oklahoma has two Fortune 500 companies headquartered in the state - ONEOK and Williams. Both are energy companies, which shouldn't surprise anybody, but that isn't the end of the story.
Take aerospace and defense.
Seven of the eight companies listed in Fortune's aerospace and defense group have a pretty big footprint across Oklahoma. That includes some of the biggest names in the entire industry... Boeing, Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, and Raytheon.
American Airlines Is Doing Something Huge In Tulsa
Did you know Oklahoma is home to one of the biggest American Airlines maintenance facilities up in Tulsa? I mean, Tulsa knows about it. But I'd bet those living in Vici are just learning that.
And then the list gets less glamorous, but big money is still big money.
Big Companies Hide In Plain Sight
Dollar General has a massive distribution center in Ardmore as well as a regular storefront what seems like every couple of miles across the state. Dollar Tree has big distribution centers in Duncan and Marietta. Who would have thought you could build an empire selling goods for $1.25?
Oklahoma's connection to huge corporations isn't limited to oil rigs and pipeline maps. There are airplanes being worked on, military equipment being built and maintained, computers and technology operations, the military-industrial complex laser fund, retail distribution, and a whole bunch of other stuff happening here under the umbrellas of companies that most Americans recognize instantly.
It's sort of wild. As much as Oklahoma is very much an oil and gas state, we're also a small part of America's much larger fortunes.
