Oklahoma has officially joined the ranks of states that have built a musical road.

If you're completely lost in that first sentence, no worries, there's some explaining to be done here.

Musical roads are built so that when your tires roll, they create a reverberating sound throughout the vehicle.

BBRRRRRRRTTTTTTTTT

You know those "Wake Up!" strips on the shoulders and centerlines of highways? They drone out a loud noise when you run over them in the event you've fallen asleep at the wheel, or more likely, become too interested in whatever is on your phone, and it's loud.

Musical roads are built with those in the driving lanes, but the bumps are spaced out and tuned to play a song instead of a warning. It's a neat thing, although the designers of Tulsa's new musical road may have missed the mark.

@2newsoklahomaWhen drivers pass over Tulsa’s Southwest Boulevard Bridge, they'll hear Woody Guthrie's "This Land is Your Land." This song was carefully selected to celebrate the Route 66 Centennial.♬ original sound - 2 News Oklahoma

Now, I would never besmirch the glory of Woody Guthrie's classic "This Land Is Your Land", he's a son of the Sooner State himself... but how does Oklahoma get a musical road that isn't tuned to the song "Oklahoma"?

It's part of the Route 66 Centennial celebration in 2026, but as The Mother Road began first in Oklahoma, it would've been an obvious choice, right?

Don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining. It's a super cool sidequest thing to check out during your Oklahoma travels. After all, the musical roads in Lawton are really neat too. They're mostly themed in hip-hop, and they sound exactly like the rhythmic thumping of potholes.

Exactly like potholes.

Yeah, they're just potholes.

All the same, maybe there are more projects in line for musical roads across the Sooner State, and perhaps everyone is saving the better choice for the better city... Can we expect it in OKC anytime soon?
