OHP Pleas for Safety After Deadly Weekend On Oklahoma Roads And Lakes
A Weekend of Heartbreak in Oklahoma: When Summer Escapes Turn Fatal.
This past weekend, the state of Oklahoma was rocked by tragedy as 12 lives were lost in a series of seven fatal traffic crashes and three drownings, according to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol.
From the quiet hum of interstate travel to the late-summer pull of local lakes, a chain of preventable incidents unfolded.
Nine people died across seven separate vehicle crashes. Among them, a horrifying early-morning semi‑truck accident on I‑35 in McClain County. It was fiery and shut down the interstate for hours.
During the response, a deputy directing traffic was struck by another vehicle, but thanks to his seatbelt, he only suffered minor injuries.
Casualties happened on the water too.
At least three drownings occurred.
One at Lake Murray, where a man fell from a jet ski while trying to retrieve his hat.
A second at Lake Texoma, where a 40‑year‑old Durant man fishing in a kayak drowned without a life jacket.
The third was reported elsewhere on Oklahoma’s lakeside this weekend.
Officials stressed that none of the victims were wearing PFD lifejackets.
In OHP’s own words, this past weekend was “devastating.”
Their plea: make smart choices. When you're in the car, wear your seatbelt. Leave space between vehicles. Don’t drive impaired. And on the water, wear a life jacket. Especially if you're out there having a good time. Sure, they can be uncomfortable, especially in the heat, but they save lives.
The Oklahoma Highway Patrol hopes this will be the wake-up call our summer season needs once in a while. The sun still shines, the roads stretch out, and lakes beckon, but safety isn’t negotiable.
Plan. Pause. Protect. Life.
