Is This Oklahoma’s Best Chips & Salsa?
If there was one topic across Oklahoma that is both universal and controversial, it has to be the ultra-opinionated discussion of which restaurant has the best chips and salsa.
Hear me out, there are so many great salsa options across Oklahoma, and they all taste different. Some are tomato-forward, others hit you in the back of the throat with peppers first. All are delicious enough to warrant a second try, and most end up with a casual "Can we get some more salsa, please?"
Here's the thing... We can only crown one as the best chips and salsa in Oklahoma, and after trying at least 250 suggested restaurants across the Sooner State, I think I can confidently nominate a solid contender.
Enrique's
There is a restaurant tucked away in a municipal airport way up in North-Central Oklahoma that serves up what may be Oklahoma's best chips and salsa.
Enrique's Mexican Restaurant is the crown jewel of the small refinery town of Ponca City.
It's literally inside the local airport, and the food is so popular that people fly in from all over the place to just grab a bite to eat.
The Puffy Chips
Hands down, Enrique's may serve up the best salsa in the state. It has the perfect amount of heat, which may be hotter than expected sometimes, but it's that good heat that melts away without making your mouth go permanently numb.
And beyond that amazing salsa, it's the chips. Made fresh by hand when you order them, and they're puffy.
The old "if you know, you know" pro-tip longtime fans will give you is bite the corner off a chip and spoon in a little salsa and queso. It's a perfect bit.
If you'd like to try your hand at making these at home, best of luck. I've tried every copycat recipe on the internet, but nothing compares to the original. Luckily, they sell their salsa in the restaurant.
That's it. That's my chosen contender for Oklahoma's best chips and salsa. It's worth the three-hour drive from Southwest Oklahoma and the immediate return trip with a miserably stuffed belly.
If you think your pick is better, don't be shy. Share that with me.
