Top States Oklahomans Are Moving To in 2025
If you’ve lived in Oklahoma long enough, you’ve probably noticed a funny trend. The same folks who swear up and down they’ll “never leave Oklahoma” suddenly pop up on Facebook posting pictures of mountain sunsets, beaches, or some place where the wind doesn’t try to throw you into a fence every March. Turns out Okies are packing up more than usual these days, and a few states keep showing up as the go-to escape routes.
The Top States Oklahomans Are Choosing Now
Texas is still the number one landing spot. Love it or hate it, it’s close, familiar, and feels like Oklahoma with a bigger ego and more Buc-ee’s. A lot of people head south chasing jobs, higher wages, or because housing still feels somewhat manageable compared to the coasts. Plus, when the biggest “culture shock” is that Whataburger is even more common down there, it’s not exactly a tough transition.
Colorado keeps stealing Okies too, especially younger families. And honestly, it's a love/hate sort of thing. They trade OK's ice storms and prairie dust for bigger mountains, tons of snow, enjoyable spring weather that doesn’t try to kill you, and an unlimited supply of hair dye to keep you every color of the rainbow year-round without the looks. The downside, of course, is affording a house the size of a shipping crate. But people still go for the lifestyle.
Arkansas has been the sleeper pick. Cheap land, quiet towns, actual trees, and enough outdoor stuff to keep even the diehards busy. It’s basically Oklahoma vibes with extra scenery, if not for the implications...
Kansas is also a wild dark horse on the list of places receiving a ton of Okies. Like, why? Perhaps some really do love Oklahoma, but hate the politics... Kansas is 100% the liberal version of the Sooner State, except they don't know anything about football.
And then there’s Florida. Every year, it becomes the “I’m tired of tornado season” retirement plan. Beaches, sunshine, no state income tax, and you can buy a house with hurricane shutters and still pay less than you would in half of Oklahoma’s growing suburbs.
Why More Oklahomans Are Leaving Than Ever
The reasons vary. Better pay. Nicer scenery. Less wind. Lefter politics. More opportunity. Or just that itch to try something new. But there’s a common thread in all of it... people aren’t leaving because they hate Oklahoma. They’re leaving because it’s getting a little harder to balance the math and quality of life the way it used to.
Places change. People change with them. And for now, a lot of Okies are changing their ZIP codes too.
All the same, plenty of people from Texas and California seem to be finding a new home here in the Sooner State. Some Texans want a cheaper lifestyle, and we have it. I guess we don't have to wonder why everyone is currently leaving California, it's been all over the news for the last decade or so, and they're more than welcome to come be a part of the Sooner State... so long as they don't try to California our Oklahoma.
