There may be no crying in baseball, but there IS a place for women! The Oklahoma City Dodgers announced last week that its Head Athletic Trainer, Chelsea Willette, is the first woman to hold an on-field role in the city's franchise history.

If you know me, I'm a huge baseball fan. And when I heard this about the OKC Dodgers, I knew I had to share it with KLAW listeners! In a recent blog post from the OKC Dodgers Beyond the Bricks blog, Willette talked about how she got to where she is today and what it's like being the ONLY WOMAN "working an on-field position in the 10-team Pacific Coast League."

Willette is currently in her fourth season with the Los Angeles Dodgers, which owns the Triple-A OKC Dodgers team, and she just finished her second season in OKC. Besides the lack of adequate places to change at a baseball stadium, Willette has faced challenges anyone seeking a career faces: proving you're good enough.

"Once I got my foot in the door and established a good reputation, then people’s preconceived notions kind of fell away,” Willette said in Beyond the Bricks. “And the Dodgers have been really, really welcoming to me. I never felt like they were looking at me differently or judging me differently in any way, so that’s been great to be a part of."

According to Beyond the Bricks, the Pacific Coast League has 10 current clubs, including the OKC Dodgers, and Willette is only the third woman to hold an on-field position, and just the second woman with the head athletic trainer title. We hope Willette continues to thrive here in Oklahoma and wherever her career takes her! You go, girl!

If you've never seen the OKC Dodgers in action, then I highly suggest you check them out next season! The OKC Dodgers will be celebrating their 25th anniversary next year. Although they don't have their 2023 schedule up, you can browse their ticket packages while you wait for that schedule to drop.
