I always figured I knew most of the tricks at Braum’s. I've eaten there enough in my life to know exactly what I want before I ever get to the counter, and I figured the menu was pretty much the menu. Or really, like most people, who cares what's on the menu... I'm gonna order the same thing I've been ordering since I was a kid, right?

Turns out, there are a few things you can order at Braum’s that aren't really on the menu at all.

And some of them are old-school enough that you might have to find somebody who actually remembers them.

Secret Braum’s Menu

First, let's be clear here... Braum’s doesn't have a secret menu. In fact, when a Braum’s employee was asked about secret menu items in an Oklahoma Reddit AMA, the answer was basically, “not really.” What the employee did reveal was a handful of things customers could ask for that most people probably don't know about.

That's a lot more interesting than the usual internet list of “secret menu” items that I'm fully convinced people just make up to troll us all.

I'm leaning towards trusting these little golden nuggets since actual Braum’s employees were giving us all a peek.

For example, that employee said you can ask for a bun instead of the biscuit on a breakfast item. That might sound like a downgrade, but sausage and cheese on a sesame seed bun slaps.

Also, to save a little cash, if you want extra sausage, just order a whole sausage biscuit. It's cheaper than a single serving of sausage. You can also order a sausage biscuit without the biscuit, but who's turning down a free biscuit?

You can even add an almost unlimited amount of extra vegetables to your burger. I know this works too because my cousin loves a messy burger. You can also add a banana to any shake for free, or it used to be free. I tried it a long time ago, still not a banana fan.

Keep in mind, some of these tricks may depend on the location and the staff, but there's no harm in asking your local Braum’s.

Braum’s Chocolate Sodas

This is where I fell down the rabbit hole.

A recent OKC discussion started with somebody trying to find a Braum’s that still makes an old-fashioned chocolate soda. They remember them from their 90s childhood, but it was all new information at their local store... But then former employees started chiming in.

One person said they worked at Braum’s in 2004 and 2005 and were actually taught how to make the chocolate sodas, even though they weren't on the menu. Another person said they still occasionally order one and that employees sometimes have to get a manager involved because they don't remember how to make it.

The former employees actually gave the details too, even though both were a little different. It's not just chocolate syrup added to your Diet Coke. They'd take some soda water, add chocolate syrup and ice cream, then top it with whipped cream and a cherry... Boom - Chocolate Soda. Another chimed in with a different recipe, but potato-potato...

That's the biggest problem. Once something disappears from the menu and enough employees leave, the recipe becomes a memory. If it sounds good to you, order one next time you're in and see if your local store can make it.

Braum’s Customized Shakes

Beyond the food, here's the real unknown star of the show. The humble shake.

If you didn't know, shakes and malts can be made with any of the flavors in the dip case. Literally, any flavor, and you can add whatever toppings you want.

It's just like the Braum's fro-yo mix, but with an ice cream shake. Want a hot fudge shake? They'll do that too, and remember, the free banana makes it a sundae shake, right?

It's not a universal secret menu or bunch of menu hacks. Some stores will and others won't. You just have to know what to ask for and hope they know what you're talking about.

Ten Iconic Oklahoma Restaurants You Have To Try

I think it's fair to say that each state probably has its own legends when it comes to restaurants. Pennsylvania has cheesesteaks, New York has wings and pizza, Texas has Franklin BBQ and Tex-Mex, etc...

Oklahoma is no different.

Birthed into statehood as a cattle state, there's no shortage of beef on any menu here, but there's a little room for chicken and fries too. Here are the absolute, hands down, best restaurants, in no particular order, everyone has to try in The Sooner State.
