These Foreign Nations have Embassy Locations in Oklahoma
I'm going out on a limb to assume you have an average understanding of an embassy. After all, we've all seen countless Hollywood spy movies--like the Jason Bourne series--where embassies play right into the story.
Sometimes they're the savior of the main character, shielding them from trouble in a foreign nation... other times the embassy staff is on the offensive trying to track down your protagonist.
We're on the same page, right? Here's a wild fact... Oklahoma is home to 11 embassy extensions of countries from all over the world.
Not embassies, exactly...
Ready for the Wikipedia technical jargon? They're not actually "embassies," but rather "consulates."
What's the difference? The embassy of a country is where the ambassador and foreign delegation are... They work directly for their nation. Consulates work for the embassy.
If this were 17th-century Japan, the embassy would be the Shogun, and the consulates would be the feudal lords delegating order throughout the country.
Why does Oklahoma have consuls?
That is a fair question. We're far from Washington politics, almost landlocked in the "heart of America." Why would any foreign nation want a presence here?
Beats me too.
Weirdly, there are a few different types of consulates here in Oklahoma.
Some are "consulate generals" who work in diplomatic embassy capacity. There are a few regular consulates the do more day-to-day paperwork for their foreign citizens--passports, visas, etc... There are also a handful of "honorary" consuls that seem to do it all of the above, but on a non-official part-time basis depending on where you Google that at.
Here's the list.
