More Oklahoma lakes have been added to the mercury consumption advisory list recently. Seven lakes have been found to have fish with higher levels of mercury contamination so they have been added to the ODEQ (Oklahoma Department of Environmental Quality) advisory list. The lakes in the updated list include: Chandler, Hefner, Shawnee, Tenkiller and Thunderbird. Click here to see the full listing and for updates.

In total there are around 66 lakes that are currently on the ODEQ mercury advisory list. It provides all the lakes and the different species of fish that may, or may not have high levels of mercury. It also provides details on consumption and safety. To answer your question no, Lake Lawtoka and Ellsworth aren't on the list. Both lakes have low levels of mercury at this time. The only lakes listed in the advisory that are close to Lawton, Fort Sill are: Lake Elmer Thomas and Quannah Parker. For these lakes the advisory posts safe species and consumption details if you're planning to eat what you catch.

The lakes that have been listed in the advisory may have higher levels of mercury in the fish, but are safe for swimming and boating. They're even safe as a source for drinking water and other usage. You're still encouraged to go fishing and even eat what you catch, just check the advisory listing so you're informed,.
