Places To Experience Native American Culture In Oklahoma
We've talked before about how Oklahoma is so wrongly considered a "fly-over" state that has little to nothing to offer modern-day America. This belief is mostly held by people that have either never been here or those who have, yet never bothered to experience the Sooner State.
We call these boring people "Basic (insert your chosen pejorative term here)" and they're usually the loudest and most obnoxious people in any conversation. They're also dead wrong about Oklahoma.
I can't tell you how many people sit around their sad little homes, living sad little lives, swearing there's nothing to do in this town/city/state. There are literally thousands of things to experience, see, do, eat, drink, be, etc... Case and point, learning about this state's amazing Native American cultures.
Long before statehood and the seven Oklahoma land runs put this place quite literally on the map, the federal government relocated thousands of Native Americans to open up lands for settling Europeans. The tale truly is tragic, but nearly 200 years later, the history is fascinating.
Long story short, between the Lousiana Purchase and Oklahoma's statehood, a multitude of cultures have settled these lands. Because of that, Oklahoma remains a deeply rich place to experience North America's original culture. From the earliest of ancient days to the now... you just have to be willing to hop off the couch long enough to go experience it.
Here's the best part, you can travel as little or as much as you want to see the most interesting histories in this state. With cultural centers and museums spread far and wide across the state, there's sure to be one or more near wherever you are.
Whenever I've had the chance to, I've stopped off and immersed myself wherever I can. Some places are destinations, others are places to stop in route to those destinations. While it would really take a serious explorer to visit them all, here are those that I've visited in my time spent in the Sooner State. I hope you find it in yourself to do the same.
