There are only a few foods in life that inspire the kind of loyalty you see with an Allsup’s burrito.

They’re not fancy. They’re not gourmet. But if you’ve ever grabbed one at midnight somewhere in West Texas, you know exactly why they have a cult following.

Nothing satisfies in the middle of the night like a hot, greasy burrito wrapped in paper, and somehow perfect. Believe it or not, the humble Allsup's burrito is the official fuel of West Texas road trips and questionable decision-making.

So when word spread that Allsup’s was finally making its way into Oklahoma, people got excited. I know I may have gotten a little too excited...

The promise of late-night burritos became a selling point all its own, and Oklahoma folks were ready to join the tradition. The only problem? According to the growing chatter online, the Oklahoma Allsup’s experience hasn’t lived up to the hype.

The biggest complaint? Empty burrito trays.

Why Midnight Matters for Allsup’s Burritos

For the uninitiated, the prime time for an Allsup’s burrito isn’t lunchtime or even dinner, it’s after midnight. That’s when the legend was born, and that’s when people expect to find those hot little torpedoes waiting in the case. But in Oklahoma, more and more people are saying the trays are picked clean by then, and nobody seems in a hurry to refill the burrito buffet.

As a comparison for the city folk and yuppies, this would be like walking into Buc-ee’s only to realize they've run out of Beaver Nuggets and hot brisket on the board.

It just doesn’t make sense.

Theories Behind Oklahoma’s Burrito Shortage

Of course, there are theories. Maybe Oklahoma locations could still be figuring out the Sooner State burrito demand, but it has been a few years now since they opened in Altus.

Maybe the managers here don’t yet realize how much of the Allsup’s brand revolves around the late-night crowd. Or maybe it’s just that Oklahoma is still finding its appreciation for these savory, molten flavor pockets. I guess there could be a chance that the burrito demand is higher than anyone thought, and some people catch Allsup's at the most inopportune moments.

Texans have had decades of late-night snacking, and maybe we’re all still newbies.

Can Oklahoma Allsup’s Live Up to the Texas Legacy?

Still, if Allsup’s wants to win over Oklahoma the way it conquered Texas, they’ll have to figure this out. You can’t build a reputation as the “West Texas Buc-ee’s” if your shelves are bare when the fans show up.

Burritos at 2 p.m. are fine. Burritos at 2 a.m. are legendary.

Oklahoma's Best Gas Station Chains

Depending on where you are in Oklahoma, there are gas station chains specific to that area. For the most part, they all have their own niche and stay to their respective boundaries. Some are better than others, some are absolutely loathed. The question remains, as we wait on Buc-ees to make an entrance to the Oklahoma travel center landscape, can any of these brands hold a candle to the Texas giant?
